Prehistoric Pendants as Instigators of Sound and Body Movements: A Traceological Case Study from Northeast Europe, <i>c.</i> 8200 cal. <scp>bp</scp>

In the Late Mesolithic graves of Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov, northwest Russia, large numbers Eurasian elk ( Alces alces ) incisors have been found. These teeth, for most part fashioned into portable pendants, seem to formed decorative sets garments or accessories deceased. This article examines both technologies associated with these artefacts and their uses, as well reflecting on sensorial experiences generated by them. Osteological analysis a sample 100 specimens indicates that all types were used making pendants. Traceological teeth modified scraping, grooving, grinding retouching. Traces wear consist general distinctive pits pecks perimeters crowns. traces indicate pendants worn before deposition in graves, such way they contact soft solid materials. pattern has until now unreported traceological literature. experiments, similar emerged when fresh hung rows bunches struck against one another. strokes created rattling sound.
